You get hung up on technicalities like I do sometimes?
What's my breath doing? Where is my soft palate? What's up with my larynx? Wait, my tongue supposed to what?
Every sound we make connects to two foundational things:
Who we believe we are
What we believe is happening
The way you sound and speak is the result of all of the influences in your life, where you grew up, the kind of person you perceive yourself to be, the way you want to relate or not relate to folks in the world.
It's a big list, and we absolutely construct an identity that we show up in the world with. Our voice is a huge part of this call lives inside of a whole energetic framework that shows up in our body our point of you and our emotional energy.
Knowing this makes our singing choices very clear. If I know who I am, my actual character/ego identity and I know what I'm believing at that moment, then the sound making becomes much more straightforward.
You don't just lift your soft palate to lift your soft palate. There's a reason that it wants to lift. It's going to be at a different level when you're shouting at someone to get back then it is when you are salivating at a basket of french fries :-).
