A Historian and a Theologian React to "The Passion of the Christ"

Описание: Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ is a controversial yet influential portrayal of Jesus’ crucifixion that held the title of highest-grossing R-rated film for 20 years. But how scripturally, historically, and theologically accurate is this depiction?
In this session, John Hamer (historian) and Leandro Palacios (theologian) react to the film in real time—offering critical analysis, academic commentary, and the occasional snort and eye-roll when the script goes off the rails. There will be history, theology, and cringe.

Join us to unpack what the film gets right and where it goes wildly wrong about the historical Jesus, the cultural and political landscape of first-century Palestine, and the gospel passion narratives. We’ll trace the medieval imagery that shaped the film, uncover the extra-biblical sources Gibson inadvertently used, and highlight common exegetical errors.

Along the way, we’ll also tackle big theological questions: What does it mean to say Jesus is fully human and fully divine? What role does suffering play in salvation? How have models like Christus Victor, Ransom theory, and Anselm’s satisfaction theory shaped Christian views of the cross?
