What ideas are basic in the Guimard's French defence? What are the best attacking ideas for White in the Guimard French? What happens when Black's f7-f6 pawn-break is delayed or never played? How bad it is after trading the dark-square bishops? A beautiful sacrifice of White which puts a nail on the coffin of Black.
This game is played at the World Youth Chess Championship for boys U-16, in Oropesa del Mar (Spain), back in 1998. It is interesting from perspective of how the French defence (Guimard's line of the Tarrasch variation in the French defence) should be played as White, with couple of thematic mistakes or inaccuracies made by black (me). There are couple of moments in which you are invited to guess the move (mainly tactical situations). Overall, an exciting miniature, in which you'll see how accurate it is required to be when playing the French with black pieces. Otherwise, you get crushed the way I got here.
Level: Intermediate.
