Museums are about objects and what these objects tell us about past ways of life. Geoff Bailey, archaeologist and curator, introduces the new exhibition at Callendar House.
In this clip, Geoff tells us a little about a sandstone axehead mould. This block of sandstone was unearthed in the Carron valley. On one of the faces of the block is the carefully carved negative impression of a flat axe whose artfully curved outline dates it to the early Bronze Age, around 2,000 BC. Small moulds such as this could be transported around the country so that scrap metal could be re-shaped into the latest fashion and brought back into use. The Glenhead mould was probably the property of an itinerant bronze worker.
This exhibition at Callendar House features just two handfuls of objects – well 10½ to be exact. It is Geoff's personal choice and someone else undertaking the task would undoubtedly make a different selection. What would you choose? Exhibition opens 26th January until 4th May 2019.
