It's April 9, 1944. About 400 Eighth Air Force heavy bombers of both types hit aircraft factories and airfields in Germany and Poland. This film was made aboard a B-17 that is part of a formation of 86 Fortresses targeting the Heinkel plant at Warnemunde, a German community edging the Baltic Sea.
Watch for German smokescreens, spread in an effort to obscure targets from the American bombers.
This is an older National Archives dub, and if the quality suffers, the topic remains interesting to all who study the strategic air war. Other targets struck that day by B-24 Liberators include an aircraft assembly plant at Tutow, inland from the Baltic. In this film, Liberators can be seen passing above the B-17s at higher altitude, possibly on the Tutow mission.
Of the approximately 400 heavy bombers aloft this day, 32 are lost, according to the Air Force. The stoic call of duty demonstrated by these men inspires us still.
