Most bumblebees nest underground—so let's build them a bunker in my Cornish hedge.

The "Underground Bunker" for Bumblebees 🐝🌿

While we focus on honeybees in hives, our wild Bumblebee queens are searching for the perfect underground cavity to start their colony. Today, I'm "rewilding" a section of my Cornish hedge to create a protected, dry nesting site.

The Build

The Site, Clearing back brambles and grass in a quiet corner.

The Cavity, Digging a small trench to house the "chamber."

The Insulation, Filling a terracotta pot with dry leaves, wood flakes, straw is also good. (Bumbles love a cozy, pre-furnished home!)

The Entrance: Installing a pipe "tunnel" into the trench to mimic a natural mouse hole.

The Install, Bedding the pot into the earth for natural insulation and topping the drainage hole with a stone to keep the rain out.

The Marker, A simple rope fence so I don’t accidentally strim my new neighbors!

It’s a simple way to boost biodiversity in your own garden or apiary. Plus, watching them find the "tunnel" entrance later in the spring is incredibly rewarding.
