Growing tropical vegetables in zone 9 USA My Backyard African Vegetable Garden is about growing culturally important African tropical vegetables in the USA in my Zone 9a Texas organic garden. I have been growing these tropical vegetables in colder climates now for more than 20 years.


My mission is to teach and inspire people to grow, process and cook these unique vegetables for Health. I believe when you grow a garden, you grow health. Aside from the obvious benefits of getting to enjoy the freshest, most nutrient dense version of the produce, gardening to me is therapeutic. I don’t know how to explain it, but it just grounds me.

I grow the African Bitterleaf plant, okra, Anchia (Gboma), African garden eggs, African garden huckleberry (Bamenda njama njama), waterleaves, sweet Bitterleaves, Ugu seeds (okong obong) etc in my garden.

I am also experimenting with tropical fruits like pawpaw (papaya), guava, and soursop Growing your own food is something I very strongly believe in.
