An iron lung is a type of negative pressure ventilator, a mechanical respirator that encloses most of a person's body within an airtight chamber. By creating alternating positive and negative pressure within the chamber, it assists breathing for individuals unable to do so on their own, typically due to respiratory muscle paralysis. Historically, it was crucial in treating polio patients and is now an iconic symbol of respiratory support. Paul Alexander, who lived for over 70 years in an iron lung after contracting polio at age 6, according to BBC News.
How it works:
• The patient lies inside the sealed cylinder with their head outside.
• A motor-driven bellows system creates a vacuum by reducing air pressure inside the chamber.
• This pressure change causes the chest to expand, drawing air into the lungs.
• When the pressure is increased, the chest contracts, expelling air.
• This rhythmic process mimics natural breathing, supporting respiration for individuals with paralyzed respiratory muscles.
