Описание: Kamathipura, a name often associated with Mumbai’s red-light district, is a place burdened with misunderstanding. While a few of its 15 lanes were once tied to prostitution, the area today is a bustling hub of small businesses, street vendors, and artisans. Yet, the broader narrative rarely gets told.

Guided by my mentor, photographer Fawzan Husain, who has documented Kamathipura several times, I set out to capture the essence of the Devi Visarjan—a celebration that brings these lanes to life. As we wandered, my perception began to shift. What had once seemed like a place defined by its history revealed itself as a vibrant community of resilience.

Just as I was about to conclude my shoot, a group of transgender joined the procession. Their dancing was liberating—full of unrestrained joy, as though no one was watching. It was in that moment I realised Kamathipura wasn’t just about its past; it was a place of humanity, survival, and spirit.

Through my lens, I hope to challenge the prevailing perceptions of Kamathipura. It is more than its reputation, a neighbourhood full of life and untold stories waiting to be seen differently.
