🏛️ LIVE: Utah v. Kouri Richins — Pre-Trial Evidentiary Hearing
Kouri Richins returns to court as attorneys prepare for her February murder trial. The 35-year-old Utah mother of three faces aggravated murder charges in the fentanyl poisoning death of her husband Eric Richins. He was found dead in their Kamas home in March 2022 with five times the lethal dose of fentanyl in his system.
Prosecutors allege Richins spiked her husband's drink to cash in on his life insurance and escape nearly $2 million in debt from her house-flipping business. The State claims she also tried to poison him two weeks earlier with a fentanyl-laced sandwich on Valentine's Day. After his death, she wrote a children's book about grief.
The defense maintains there's no physical evidence connecting Richins to any fentanyl. A key prosecution witness has since recanted his statement. Trial begins February 23, 2026.

📖 CASE BACKGROUND
On March 4, 2022, Eric Richins was found dead in his bed in Kamas, Utah. He was 39. The medical examiner determined fentanyl intoxication killed him, with blood levels five times higher than lethal. The fentanyl was illicit, not medical grade.
Kouri told investigators she made her husband a Moscow Mule that night to celebrate closing on a real estate deal. Eric's family said the couple had been arguing, and Eric had allegedly told them, "If I die, you need to take a look at her because I think she's trying to kill me."
Prosecutors allege Richins purchased fentanyl from her housekeeper and first tried to poison Eric on Valentine's Day with a drug-laced sandwich. The State claims she texted a paramour the next day saying "if he could just go away..." Two weeks later, Eric was dead. The State alleges the fatal dose was in a "lemon shot" so he'd drink it all at once.
Richins was arrested in May 2023. She also faces 26 counts in a separate case alleging mortgage fraud and money laundering. She's been held without bail since her arrest and maintains her innocence.
