In a surprising discovery, researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst found a liquid structure that defies the laws of thermodynamics. Graduate student Anthony Raykh was studying emulsification—mixing immiscible liquids like oil and water—using magnetized nickel particles. But instead of forming a smooth mixture, the liquids formed a stable, curved structure resembling a Grecian urn.
This was unexpected. Normally, emulsions happen because added particles reduce surface tension, allowing mixing. But here, the magnetic particles increased the surface tension, bending the boundary and stopping the mix. Despite repeated attempts, the liquids refused to emulsify—violating what thermodynamics predicts.
With help from professors and researchers at Tufts and Syracuse, the team concluded that strong magnetic forces were overpowering the usual thermodynamic behavior. This created a stable, shape-recovering form—never before seen in soft-matter physics.
Though the discovery has no immediate practical use, it opens up new questions about how materials behave under unusual forces. It could lead to breakthroughs in smart fluids, soft robotics, or programmable materials.
Published in Nature Physics, this experiment shows that even simple lab work can uncover hidden laws of nature—and remind us that science still holds many mysteries.
