Historic site of Washington State Headquarters acquired and opened by New York State in 1850
It is the first publicly owned and operated historical site in the United States and a national landmark.
It is also part of Newburgh’s 445-acre East Side Historic District.
From April 1782 to August 1783, General George Washington, commander-in-chief of the Continental Army
established the headquarters and residence in the stone farmhouse of the Jonathan and Trinje Hasbrouck family in Newburgh
This is the longest time he stayed at any headquarters in the nearly 9 years of the revolution.
The layout of the house reflects the living conditions in Washington at that time, and is currently open to tourists for viewing.
