"Retrace"
Poem by Nell Shaw Cohen
ECHOES OF THE PAST
Hundreds leave home
Sing the Trail
To make a new life in Alta California.
ON THE OPEN LAND
Vast blue, bright light
Retrace the Trail
On the footpaths of California.
FANDANGO OF THE PAST
Spanish, Native, Mestizo, Afro-Latino
Dance the Trail
From the Sonoran Desert to the Golden Gate.
ON THE OPEN ROAD
City, suburb, beach, and farm
Retrace the Trail
On the highways of California.
THE PAST IS PRESENT
1,200 of miles of stories
Thread through the landscape
Map the Trail
Onto the United States.
SACRED SPACE
A Mission church and its gardens
Abalone shells in the cemetery:
A memorial to thousands of Native lives destroyed.
They made the trail.
Their legacy and their descendants:
Still here.
We retrace the Trail."

Landscape Music: Rivers & Trails was a nationwide series of concerts in Fall 2018 commemorating the 50th Anniversaries of the National Trails System Act and the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. Coordinated by the Landscape Music Composers Network, and presented in collaboration with organizations, venues, and performers across the country, these concerts highlighted and celebrated the significance of our national trails and rivers through musical expression.
The Landscape Music Composers Network is a group whose music engages with landscape, nature, and place. Including artists both established and emerging, writing in diverse styles, this network is a platform for collaborative projects aiming to increase appreciation and awareness of the natural world through music. Each of the five concert programs in Landscape Music: Rivers & Trails featured World Premieres of works composed for small chamber ensembles, created in directed response to remarkable places protected under the National Trails System Act and the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.
