Police declared an unlawful assembly after a protest near Los Angeles City Hall escalated into clashes with officers.
According to authorities, the demonstration moved through downtown Los Angeles toward the Edward R. Roybal Federal Building, where a dispersal order was issued. Police say some individuals in the crowd began throwing bottles and launching commercial-grade fireworks toward LAPD skirmish lines.
Traffic was shut down in the surrounding area as officers ordered people to leave or face arrest under California Penal Code 409. Exit routes were provided for those attempting to leave the area.
Shortly afterward, tear gas was deployed into the crowd, according to ABC 7.
This video shows the tense moments as police attempted to clear the area.
