The place name Molkom is first mentioned in 1503 and was then written Molchen and Molchom. It then referred to a farm, which later had to give its name to the nearby railway station. The name may be formed from the Old Swedish word muld eller mold meaning 'mull'. [5]
In the 19th century, Molkom was one of Värmland's largest mills, and there are still many industrial companies - especially in the steel industry.
The Bergslagsbanan Kil – Daglösen – Ställdalen runs through Molkom. The railway began to be operated on March 1, 1876 and it was the railway that made the community of Molkom grow.
Molkom was from 1734 to 1970 a district court in Nyeds district.
Molkom is located in Nyed parish and was part of Nyed's county municipality after the municipal reform of 1862. This was established for the town on 22 February 1946, Molkom's municipal community, which was dissolved on 31 December 1958. The town has been part of Karlstad municipality since 1971.
