The Gamla Waterfall Path.
This waterfall is the tallest in Israel; the trek takes around 45 minutes each way. In the summer, take plenty of drinking water with you.
"For it was situated upon a rough ridge of a high mountain…it is like a Camel in figure from whence it is so named… On its acclivity, which is straight, houses are built, and those very thick and close to one another. The city also hangs so strangely, that it looks as if it would fall down upon itself, so sharp is it at the top" (Josephus Flavius, The war of the Jews)
Gamla, was an ancient Jewish Town in the Golan Heights, named so because it was built on a hill resembling a camel's hump (Gamal in Hebrew means camel).
80 BCE - some 5000 Jews, mostly farmers lived here.
66 AD - The Great Jewish revolt against the Roman start and soon most of the land of Israel was conquered by the invaders.
When some 55000 Roman troops arrive at Gamla, they lay siege to the town for several weeks before their first attack, but soon had to retreat due to heavy losses in battle.
The second attack however went well for the Romans and when the Jews realized that all was lost, many committed suicide by jumping off the cliffs, the others were killed by the Romans.
This is why Gamla is known as the 'Masada of the north'.
Today, amongst the ruins an ancient Synagogue and several Mikvah's (Jewish ritual baths) can be found.
