The directorial debut from Virgil W. Vogel (1919-1996), this low-budget American sci-fi adventure film features a fabulous cast that includes English actor Alan Napier (1903-1988), Cynthia Patrick (1934-2008), Hugh Beaumont (1910-1982), popular b-movie actor John Agar (1921-2002), stage, radio, film and television actor Nestor Paiva (1905-1966), Phil Chambers (1916-1993), Rodd Redwing (1904-1971), and British film and television actor Robin Hughes (1920-1989). Written for the screen by László Gorog (1903-1997), the film features impressive set designs and special effects for its time, particularly in its portrayal of the underground world and the creatures that inhabit it. The idea of an ancient civilization sealed away from the modern world and, who sacrifices its most rebellious inhabitants due to their limited food supply, is a powerful one. Jack Kevan (1912-1997), the gifted makeup artist who worked on such memorable films as 'It Came from Outer Space (1953), 'Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), and 'This Island Earth (1955), did a great job in designing the bug-eyed denizens of the underworld. Amongst the subterranean dwellers is Alan Napier (best known as Alfred in the Batman television series) and Cynthia Patrick (who had a very short film career) as the love interest. Accounting for much of the eerie atmosphere is the gloomy photography. By keeping many of the scenes in shadow, Vogel was able to get across the strange, claustrophobic feel of his settings. Stock footage used came from a documentary of Edmund Hillary's historic climb of Mount Everest. Though the film ranks as one of Universal's least appreciated films, 'The Mole People is a fun and entertaining film, and a must-see for fans of classic monster movies. Some of the films footage was later re-used in 'The Wild World of Batwoman (1966).

One of the best assets of the film is its musical score, composed by Hans J. Salter, Herman Stein, and Heinz Roemheld, and orchestrated by David Tamkin (1906-1975), a highly successful and prolific Hollywood composer, arranger, and orchestrator who also had an abiding interest in opera. These three composers worked alongside each other in fashioning the musical backdrop of hundreds of films for Universal Studios which were supervised by music director Joseph Gershenson (1904-1988). Other notable composers who also worked on these classic films were Henry Mancini (1924-1994), Milton Rosen (1906-1994), and Frank Skinner (1897-1968). A sizable chunk of the score was composed by Heinz Roemheld, who's memorable 'Mole People theme, and some wonderfully descriptive music written for the sequences with little dialogue, offers ample evidence that he was at the top of his game regardless of the quality of the film he was working for. Each composer's input transcended the film with creative, innovative, and elegant writing, perfectly setting the tone of the film. Hans J. Salter worked for almost thirty years at Universal Studios, arranging, composing, conducting, and serving as music director. Of the one-hundred-and-fifty plus film scores he worked on, his most celebrated works include 'The Invisible Man Returns (1940), 'The Spider Woman (1943), 'Man-Eater of Kumaon (1948), 'The Killer That Stalked New York (1950), 'The Black Shield of Falworth (1954), and 'Incident at Phantom Hill (1966). Herman Stein contributed music to almost two-hundred films of every known genre, but his most enduring legacy was the music he wrote for several sci-fi and horror classics including 'It Came from Outer Space (1953), 'Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), 'This Island Earth (1955), 'Tarantula (1955), and 'The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957). Heinz Roemheld had composed, arranged, and conducted music for more than three-hundred-and-fifty films, both in America and Germany. Some of his more notable scores include 'All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), 'The Black Cat (1934), 'Dracula's Daughter (1936), 'The Man Who Talked Too Much (1940), 'Flight from Destiny (1941), 'Rogues of Sherwood Forest (1950), 'Ruby Gentry (1952), and 'The Monster That Challenged the World (1957).
