This video tutorial explains the evidence that ripples on the surface of water and sound moving through air are both due to wave motion, and NOT the bulk movement of material in one direction.
Evidence that water ripples and sound are waves:
1) Ripples on water radiate outwards in circles. If the water itself was moving outwards, we would be left with no water in the middle!
2) A floating object on the water oscillates up and down, perpendicular to the direction of the ripples = wave characteristic. The object is not 'carried along' with the ripples.
3) When sound travels through air, it makes objects vibrate back and forth (e.g. your eardrum). We don't feel a 'wind' when we hear a loud noise.
