Find Whether a Signal is Periodic or Aperiodic (Discrete-Time)
In this video, we learn a simple step-by-step method to check whether a given discrete-time signal is periodic or aperiodic.
🔹 STEP 1: Write the Standard Equation
First, write the standard form of the signal:
For sine/cosine signals:
x(n) = A sin(wn + φ) or x(n) = A cos(wn
For complex exponential signals:
x(n) = e^jwn
🔹STEP 2: Compare and Find w (Omega)
Compare the given signal with the standard equation and identify the value of w (angular frequency).
🔹STEP 3: Find the Fundamental Time Period
Use the periodicity cond↓n for discrete-time signals:
w/2π = m/n
✨ where m and N are integers.
If w/2π is rational, the signal is periodic
If w/2π is irrational, the signal is aperiodic
The fundamental time period is:
N = 2πκ / ω
🔹 Final Conclusion
✅ Rational value → Periodic signal
❌ Irrational value → Aperiodic signal
This method is very useful for exams, DSP problem solving, and concept clarity.
