The main witness today (Friday, February 20) in a Georgia father's criminal trial related to his son's school shooting is Deborah "Debbie" Polhamus, the defendant's mother-in-law and the grandmother of accused school shooter Colt Gray.
Deborah "Debbie" Polhamus testified about her grandson's gun and her decision to buy him ammunition, which she said defendant Colin Gray okayed.
02:06 "I gave him money. He wanted bullets."
02:15 "I told him he had to ask his dad."
02:37 "Okay, so you bought ammunition for Colt, but it was because Colin said you could?"
04:32 "If he needed something money wise, food for the kids, light bill, rent, anything, could he ask you."
"Yeah."
"And did he routinely ask you?"
"He asked me several times."
09:43 "We went in the house, told Marcee to get her stuff together. We were going back to Fitzgerald."
10:53 "When you were leaving, did you see Colt?"
"Yes."
"Tell me about that."
"We were getting in the car, and he opened the door, the door of what the back door the house."
"Okay."
"He had overheard a conversation her daddy, she and her daddy were having, and it really upset him. And he was just yelling, don't come back. You lied to me. You're making all this up."
12:16 "This was upsetting to everyone that Colt's come out, yelling?"
"Oh yeah, it was to them."
12:48 "And did you give him anything — for Colt?
"Marcee gave him some medicine."

13:17 "Now, at this point, wouldn't be safe to say that Colt's mental and emotional health is kind of spiraling?"
13:30 "And even before this had, he routinely had violent outbursts?"
"Yes."
""And you and Colin had actually spoken about Colt's mental health ... Colin about Colt needing professional help for this?,"
Background:
A gunman killed two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on September 4, 2024. Eight students and one teacher were injured.
The victims were Mason Schermerhorn, 14; Christian Angulo, 14; Richard Aspinwall, 39 and a math teacher and defensive coordinator for the school's football team; and Cristina Irimie, 53 and a math teacher.
Colin Gray's oldest son, Colt Gray, is awaiting trial on 55 charges, including counts of murder and aggravated assault.
The father is currently on trial for 29 charges, including involuntary manslaughter, second-degree murder, cruelty to children and reckless conduct. Prosecutors say he gave his son the rifle used in the shooting as a Christmas gift, despite being told by law enforcement to keep guns away from him.
The jury was selected from Hall County instead of Barrow County because of extensive pretrial publicity in Barrow County. The trial is being held at the Barrow County Courthouse in Winder. Nicholas Primm, the chief judge in Georgia's Piedmont Judicial Circuit, is presiding.
