Barnacles are small crustaceans that live mostly in the ocean, and they are best known for attaching themselves to hard surfaces. You can usually find them in:
• Rocky shorelines - especially in the intertidal zone (the area between high and low tide).
• Ship hulls and boat bottoms - they cling tightly and can cause "fouling."
• Piers, docks, and pilings - where the water splashes and tides rise and fall.
Other animals - such as whales, turtles, crabs, and even mussel shells.
They thrive in shallow coastal waters, but some species also live in deeper seas. Essentially, anywhere there's a solid surface underwater, barnacles can settle and live.
