This time, instead of visiting the big tourist cities like Rabat, Casablanca, or Marrakech, I decided to go local — to Meknes (مكناس), one of Morocco’s four historic imperial cities and the least visited by foreigners.

When I told my Moroccan friends I was going to Meknes, they all asked “why?” But what I discovered shocked me — beautiful architecture, kind locals, ancient Jewish cemeteries, horse carriages, and tea for 25 cents. There are no tourists, no scams, just real Morocco.

📸 WHAT I DISCOVERED

🏛️ Meknes — Morocco’s Forgotten Capital:
Founded in the 11th century by the Almoravids, Meknes became Morocco’s capital in the 17th century under Sultan Moulay Ismail, who dreamed of making it the “Versailles of Morocco.” The massive Bab Mansour Gate (باب المنصور), royal stables, and El Hedim Square are reminders of its imperial glory.

☪️ Imperial City with Jewish Heritage:
I visited the Jewish Cemetery of Meknes, one of the oldest in North Africa, where Hebrew inscriptions still mark the tombs. My guide even showed me a synagogue-museum dedicated to Morocco’s Jewish community — a side of Morocco few tourists ever see.

🫖 Local Hospitality:
In the Mila souk, a kind local invited me for Moroccan mint tea (النعناع) and fresh donuts. Total cost? 80 cents for two people. Genuine smiles, no scams, no stress — just people proud of their city.

🐫 Camel Leather Handicrafts:
Meknes is famous for its camel-leather bags and belts, handmade by local artisans. Prices are a fraction of what you’d pay in Marrakech, and the quality is unmatched.

🐴 Horse Carriage & Sultan’s Palace:
I ended my day riding a traditional calèche around the Royal Palace, Heri es-Souani (royal granaries), and Sahrij Swani Lake, where locals gather at night for food, music, and laughter.

💡 Why You Should Visit Meknes:
It’s cheaper than Fez or Marrakech, safer than most big cities, and home to some of Morocco’s friendliest people. If you want an authentic Moroccan experience — come to Meknes before it’s discovered.
