🎣 “Chasing Gold in the Jungle”

There are rivers in South America that don’t show up on maps.
Brown water, heavy with rain. Parrots screaming in the canopy. Heat thick enough to bend the air.

That’s where I found myself — somewhere between Bolivia and forever — chasing a rumor.
A fish said to fight like a tarpon, hit like a freight train, and glow like it swallowed the sun.
The Golden Dorado.

We’d been hiking upriver since dawn.
Boots full of mud, reels slung over our shoulders.
The guide just smiled when I asked how far. “Not far,” he said — which in jungle terms means: you’ll get there when you earn it.

When we finally reached the pool, the world went still.
A glass-clear eddy turned gold as something rolled beneath the surface.
I stripped line. Heart hammering.

First cast — nothing.
Second cast — I saw a flash.
Third cast — the river exploded.

It wasn’t a bite. It was a collision.
The fish came up swinging, shaking its head in mid-air, scales throwing fire in every direction.
For a second I thought I’d lost it — then the line came tight again, and I realized I wasn’t fighting a fish anymore.
I was hanging on to a piece of lightning.

It tore downstream, jumped again — once, twice, three times — before finally giving in, just long enough for me to cradle it in the current.

Up close it didn’t look real.
Gold so bright it looked molten. Eyes dark and ancient.
You could feel the history in it — the wildness that still refuses to be tamed.

I let it go and watched it vanish into the dark.
All that gold, gone in a heartbeat.
But that’s the thing about the Dorado.
You don’t keep it.
It keeps you.
