I converted this fire-damaged lawn tractor to Electric. There is a no welding on this project, and it's built from free-find and purchased parts. This was a quick and easy project for me to build /convert. The 11HP Sears Craftsman lawn tractor was given to me years ago, but unfortunately, the tractor caught on fire and was damaged. I figured this old tractor would be a perfect candidate for conversion to electric, given its manual transmission. The cost of this conversion was about $500.00 USD, but most of the parts were originally bought for other projects, and the 80Ah batteries were for a solar system. I don't know the age of the tractor; it could be late 1970s or 1980s. I show in this video how I converted the tractor and show some build footage. The tractor uses two 80 Ah deep-cycle batteries for the mower motors and four 12V 20Ah batteries for the drive motor. I used a 48V BLDC motor kit to drive the tractor. The left mower motor is from a curb find 24V lawn mower, and the right side is powered by a belt drive 24V 500-watt DC motor. The tractor cuts for about 45 minutes straight until the drive motor batteries run down; the mower batteries last much longer. This mower takes very little energy to charge, and I use homemade solar panels to help charge. The wiring is fairly straightforward, just using relay switches, and the motor and controller are just plug and play unless the rotation needs to be changed. I show in my other videos more info on hooking up the BLDC motor controller. This is still a work in progress, and I will be upgrading the cables, battery restraints and switches, adding a battery monitoring system and changing out the lead-acid batteries and upgrading to LifeP04. I have nothing against internal combustion engines, but there are some advantages to an electric mower. The mower is much quieter, and there are no exhaust fumes, also no issues with carburetors going bad over the winter from ethanol fuel. The only disadvantage is the limited run time and less power on my EV conversion. This lawn tractor works well for doing the areas where the large tractor and finishing mower won't fit.
