We are very delighted that we had Matteo Maggiori from Stanford University as speaker at this year's Bundesbank Lecture.
In his lecture, he presented a new framework for geoeconomics that combines economic modelling with an artificial intelligence approach to analyze large-scale text data. Geoeconomics examines how states leverage financial and trade relationships to achieve geopolitical and economic goals. From Renaissance banking and the Marshall Plan to China’s Belt and Road Initiative and recentU.S. financial sanctions, the use of economic hegemony has a long history. Yet key questions remain: How effective is geoeconomic power? Which sectors are strategic? Is geoeconomic power a zero-sum game, or can it generate global gains? Matteo Maggiori explored the origins and mechanisms of geoeconomic power, its implications for economic security, and the challenges posed by hegemonic states in shaping international organizations and global interdependence.
