Jarre's Laser Harp Sound is, what I call "outrageous signature sound" ... All-Time-Hall-Of-Famer!!!
I sampled the original sound - he used an ELKA synth - and published a demo here:
• Advanced Sound Sampling - Jean Michel Jarr...
How to bring this squeaky MODX to play powerful, scratchy Low's? ... only by Samples!
The MODX is not a "synthesizer" as one may expect. It is a (nostalgic) FM-synth. But when it comes to modern times & "subtractive synthesis", it only can "subtract". You want to craft easily and with outrageous oversight? Use a softsynth!
Project:
crafting this famous "Laser Harp"-Sound of JMJ with a Softsynth.
Sampling it with nice software "made in Germany"
importing it to the MODX
adding some features
To craft this signature sound is not the easiest task (indeed: impossible). As allways in the synth-scene, it is hard to get any information out of their language from planet Mars and clinching on ancient machines. Those machines are no longer available...synths are. Only instructions, how to do it with any synth are missing.
Here the main difficulty was, that one of its signatures is pretty special And there I encountered a large surprise. I was not able to do this with the softsynth. BUT the MODX has this feature, called PEG.
Lazy ... I still used my originally made samples. Had to AmpEG them in order to remove my original thinking. And then modified it with the PEG. So some punch could be missing. If I have time to waste, I would sample the sound anew and see, if I get it "punchier".
Update: failed to improve. As everything inside the MODX also the PEG has limited quality. Perhaps I'll find out how to do this with a softsynth... one day...
