It’s about time! Chinese culture inspires global watchmakers

As part of the Shanghai Summer International Consumption Season, Watches and Wonders Shanghai was held at the West Bund Art Center. This year’s tradeshow features 9 of the world’s top watchmakers, providing an excellent opportunity for watch enthusiasts and experienced collectors to get up close and personal with the art of fine watchmaking.

What really stands out is that the world's leading watch brands are subtly incorporating Chinese elements and culture into their latest designs. These timepieces, which blend tradition and modernity, are winning the hearts of collectors.

IWC Schaffhausen, a leader in luxury watchmaking, is among them. The company brings a special product to celebrate the upcoming Year of the Snake, which pays homage to the sixth animal in the Chinese zodiac.

The newest collection from Vacheron Constantin is a quartet of watches inspired by the ancient Chinese “Seawater Cliff” motif, which is a decorative symbol that first appeared in the 14th century and is specific to the imperial court of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The symbol, which depicts a mountain towering above the waves as they crash against its cliffs, is omnipresent in court architecture, furniture and porcelain, as well as in Imperial clothing and ceremonial dragon robes.

Many exhibitors say China is not only one of the most important markets in terms of spending power but also a source of creativity and inspiration.

This global watchmaking event, which originated in Geneva, made its debut in Shanghai in 2020 and has been held here three times. The show also features watchmaking workshops that demonstrate the art of watchmaking, allowing even novice enthusiasts to have fun.
