Gonorrhea screening is essential for early detection and treatment, especially since many infected individuals may not show symptoms. Here are the primary screening methods:
Common Gonorrhea Tests
Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) – The most accurate and widely used method. It detects gonorrhea's genetic material from urine or swab samples.
Culture Test – A sample is collected from the infected site and grown in a lab to confirm the presence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
Gram Stain – A microscopic examination of a sample, often used for diagnosing gonorrhea in men with urethral discharge.
Urine Test – A simple, non-invasive method that detects gonorrhea bacteria in urine.
Swab Test – Samples taken from the throat, rectum, cervix, or urethra to check for infection.
Who Should Get Tested?
Sexually active individuals (especially those under 25)
People with multiple partners
Individuals with STI symptoms (painful urination, discharge, pelvic pain)
Pregnant women (to prevent transmission to newborns)
Men who have sex with men (MSM) (regular screening recommended)
