Labor has ‘absurd diversity problems’ in MPs work backgrounds: Liberal MP

Описание: Liberal MP Jason Falinski has slammed Labor’s lack of diversity in its MPs work background, calling it an “absurd situation”.

Mr Falinski said the Labor Party has an ongoing issue of electing members from similar occupational backgrounds, and insisted the same criticism could not be made of the Coalition government.

“Diversity for the Labor Party in work backgrounds is a class action lawyer,” he told Sky News.

Labor MP Patrick Gorman vehemently rejected the claims and said the ALP has “diversity of the community” which is clear in the candidates the party pre-selects and then elects.

Mr Gorman pointed to the recent Western Australia election which he said saw multiple new Labor members elected from a wide range of work backgrounds.

“We’ve elected teachers, we’ve elected doctors, we elected a sparky,” he said.

The Labor MP told Sky News there needs to be diversity in all aspects in political parties including members’ backgrounds, experiences, and policy views.

“You do need diversity, that’s a good thing."
