In June, Susan Watts and I recorded a set @greatcircles9047 in Philly. 🎺
Susan is a Legend of Philly klezmer — the heir to a Ukrainian Yiddish music dynasty, who simultaneously cherishes the tradition she inherited and makes it ferociously and irreverently her own. In this set, we draw from archival recordings of Susan’s family— interviews with family members, recordings of her mother (drummer Elaine Hoffman Watts), and tunes from her grandfather and great grandfather Joseph and Jakey Hoffman — while imbuing them with our own live improvised chitchat.
Thank you to the dearest Justin for making this happen and editing together this gorgeous video. We adore Great Circles and couldn’t wish for a better home for this piece.
