Many of my beginning students are intrigued by pastels but because they feel that good pastels are too expensive, they come to class with a lot of cheaper pastels. When you're trying to create a pastel painting, all that causes is frustration!! I would much rather students come to class with a small starter kit (like the Schminke set I am using) or a selection of individually chosen pastels - a dozen carefully selected soft pastels is all you'll need to begin. Then you can add to your collection over time.
