IF...THEN...WHEN (LOOP FOR THE FUTURE)

This talk will focus on personal strategies and experiences towards working as an artist creating digital audio visual performances, installations and single channel generative works while reflecting on past positions at an artist-run centre and SFMOMA. What can we do as artists working within this milieu in order to preserve our work from the start – while hoping to avoid the loop of consistently re-making, and re-doing for the current operating system and ever changing hardware requirements? Or is this in fact an intrinsic part of our future in order to consider software-based works more akin to music compositions and thereby building a profile of acceptable outcomes as the work is iterated?

BIO

Matthew Biederman works across media and milieus, architectures and systems, communities and continents since 1990. He creates works that utilize light, space and sound to reflect on the intricacies of perception mediated through digital technologies via installations, screen-based works and performances. Since 2008 he is a co-author of Arctic Perspective Initiative, dedicated to untangling ways of knowing, from traditional knowledge, culture and new technologies throughout the circumpolar region. His work has been featured at: Lyon Bienniale, Istanbul Design Bienniale, The Tokyo Museum of Photography, ELEKTRA, Montreal Bienniale, Ars Electronica, and CTM among many others.
