Omothymus sp. “Magnus” in the Wild
Many people don’t realize that Indonesia is home to some of the most impressive tarantula species in the world — and one of them is Omothymus sp. “Magnus.”
The discovery of a new species of Sumatran tarantula, which I initially named Omothymus sp. magnus femur tiger, is now known as Omothymus sp. magnus. I named it "magnus," meaning large, because adult females can reach 22-23 cm.
This tarantula is native to Indonesia and can be found in specific forested areas. What makes Omothymus sp. Magnus truly special is its beauty and size. It has a striking coloration, with elegant tones that stand out in its natural habitat, and it is considered a large arboreal tarantula, making it even more fascinating to observe.
In the wild, Omothymus sp. Magnus is an arboreal species, which means it lives mostly in trees. You can usually find it inside tree hollows, behind loose bark, or in natural cavities. These spiders prefer humid environments, such as tropical rainforests, especially areas with minimal human disturbance.
When searching for this species, it’s important to:
• Look at night time, as tarantulas are mostly nocturnal
• Scan tree trunks and branches carefully
• Move slowly and quietly to avoid disturbing them
• Always respect their habitat and avoid harming the spider
Besides its impressive appearance, Omothymus sp. Magnus plays an important role in the ecosystem as a natural predator, helping maintain balance in the forest.
This species is not just beautiful — it is a reminder of how rich and unique Indonesia’s wildlife truly is. Observing it in the wild is a privilege, and conservation should always come first.
