For all those headbangers who have told me "eh, I tried listening to some NWOBHM but it all sounds like old 1970s rock", this one's for you! While many NWOBHM acts strongly stuck to their hard rock influences and can sound a tad dated by 1980s heavy metal standards, there were plenty of bands revving it up to play loose 'n lethal heavy metal that can go toe-to-toe with any of the classic heavy metal acts of the 1980s. Presented here are 8 slabs of pure molten metal that prove without a doubt that the NWOBHM scene was already perfecting the power, thrash, and speed metal formulas that would take off as the NWOBHM waned. From the aggressive sounds of SWEET SAVAGE and JJs POWERHOUSE to the hyper-speed velocity of JAGUAR and BITCHES SIN these bands propelled heavy metal into the 1980s with a bang.
(Yes, you may note some structural similarities to the way some of these bands kick off their songs. While NWOBHM covers a wide range of bands with different styles, there were certainly some riffs and ideas that got borrowed heavily among different acts)
