In a quiet valley lived a poor woodcutter named Eli and his daughter, Mira.
Their house was small,
their meals were simple,
but every evening they laughed together beneath the stars.
One night, a glowing fairy appeared and gifted Eli a lantern.
“This lantern will grant whatever you wish,” the fairy said.
“But only while your heart stays light.”
At first, Eli wished for warm bread.
The lantern glowed—bread appeared.
Then he wished for a stronger roof, then better clothes.
Each wish came true.
Soon, neighbors admired his comfort. Whispers grew.
“You could be rich,” they said. “Why stop now?”
Eli listened.
He wished for gold. The lantern flickered, but still obeyed.
He wished for more. The light dimmed.
He wished to be greater than others—and the lantern went dark.
Terrified, Eli shook it, begged it, cursed it. Nothing happened.
Mira gently held his hand.
“Father,” she said, “we were happiest before the gold—when we wished only for what we needed.”
Eli felt his heart soften. He whispered,
“I wish to be content again.”
The lantern glowed one last time—then vanished.
But something brighter remained.
That night, Eli and Mira ate simple bread under the stars, laughing as before.
And Eli realized happiness had never lived in the lantern—it had lived in knowing when enough was enough.
