A look at My Collection of Factory Pontiac V8 1960-79 Spin On Oil filter adapter Housings I have.
A Look at the Oil Filter adapter housing from my 1965 Olds 425 Super Rocket V8 engine.
Another Look at the Somewhat Rare Obscure 1961-63 Pontiac Tempest 4-cylinder Factory Oil Filter Blockoff plate.
An Oil Filter was not standard equipment on the Tempest 4 cylinder ! Actually a check off option 1962-63 years.
Lots of Debate over Blocking Off Oil Filter Bypass Valves.
I used to do it all the time but no longer will again.
My Present 1976 Pontiac 455 520 Hp V8 in my 1963 Grand Prix I initially blocked off the Bypass valve hole with a 3/8" N.P.T. Plug. Used a K&N HP 2003 Racing oil filter.
Fired the engine up and broke it in.
I noted lower than expected 100Psi Hot oil pressure I built the 455 for, Target 7000+ rpms.
So I removed the plugged off Oil Filter adapter and installed a Cleaned up non modified 1965 year Straight Oil Filter adapter with the Bypass valve intact.
Oil pressure picked up 10 psi Instantly to 100 psi Hot at 4000-7000 crank rpms !
All Oil Filters are Restriction as Rpms climb up.
Pontiac V8 Oil Pump Output is 11-13 gallons per minute oil flow that's with a stock oil pump .
SD455 80 psi Pump puts out even more.
The Butler Schumann Racing Oil Pump I use it came with a Flow Sheet Dyno printoff, It flows 21-23 gallons per minute !
So when you look at what store bought oil filters can flow around 3-4 gallons per minute typical only !.....
Best Racing Filters can only flow 8-11 gallons per minute , when you block off the bypass valve you stand a very good chance of starving Your Engine of oil volume needed at High Racing RPMS !
THE BYPASS VALVE IN THE OIL SYSTEM OF ALL ENGINES NEEDS TO OPEN TO BYPASS THE OIL FILTER AT HIGH RPMS, ITS A RESTRICTION.
THE OIL FILTER ONLY FILTERS OIL AT IDLE SPEEDS !
THAT IS WHAT FULL OIL FLOW MEANS.
DIRTY RECIRCULATING OIL AT HIGH RPMS !
DIRTY OIL IS BETTER THAN NO OIL FLOW RESTRICTED DOWN !
A Few Past Pontiac V8 Racers Spinning 8,000-9,000 RPMS have Removed The Stock Oil Filter Adapter and installed the Early Tempest T/4 4 - cylinder Cast Iron Blockoff Plate.
T/4 Blockoff plate has plenty of Cavity Surface Area in square inches on the backside to allow the Oil from the pump to make the 180 degree turn back into the Main 5/8" Engine Oil Gallery that runs straight Backside of the Pontiac V8 Block Passenger Bank to Drivers Bank.
Then Feed the Left Hand lifter gallery, All #5, #4, #3, #2, & #1 Main Bearings, Then Cam Bearings, #1 Main is Rifle Drilled to Feed the Passenger Right Hand Lifter Bank Oiled Last.
Be an Interesting Test trying out the T/4 Oil Filter adapter Blockoff plate and seeing what Hot Oil Pressure is.
Should see an increase Eliminating several 90 and 180 degree turns the Engine Oil must Route through the Filter adapter housing and oil filter itself.
