The Belkan War: Operation Constantine - Liberation of Directus, Ustio

On May 13, 1995, the Allied Forces recaptured the capital city of Ustio, Directus, from the invading Belkans. The successful parachute drop at Solis Ortus on the previous day allowed the Osean forces to approach Directus from the south, while Ustian forces attacked from the north. Ustio's famous mercenaries of the 6th Air Division, 66th Air Force Unit known as "Galm Team," covered the Allies' advance into the city. In response, Belka sent their 5th Air Division, 23rd Tactical Fighter Squadron "Gelb" (Belkan for "yellow"), but both aircraft were shot down by Galm, killing squadron leader Major Orbert Jager. His wingman, Rainer Altman, ejected from his aircraft and parachuted into Directus, where he was cared for by a local family. After the war, Altman remained in Directus and became a published author.

Mission 06, "Diapason" is an air-to-ground mission with a small number of aircraft to mix things up. This mission begins on the Knight style, but all neutral targets are destroyed, bringing the gauge down to Soldier. At the end of the mission, Gelb appears, utilizing a modified form of a maneuver known as the beam defense position, or "Thach weave," where as an enemy attacks one plane, the other will then maneuver to attack the enemy. Gelb also has the unique ability to fire missiles from their aircraft backwards, and can sandwich the player between their two aircraft this way. Gelb is thought to be a reference to Ace Combat 04's Yellow Squadron, as gelb is German for yellow, and both squadrons fly Su-37s with yellow bands on the wingtips. Altman's name may also reference a special forces member in AC04, mentioned in the line, "Altman, use your hand grenades!" In this mission, I use the F-15C with its default blue-striped paint scheme, the canon aircraft for the player character, Cipher.
