The final 11 Ringling Bros. circus elephants have arrived at conservation center in Florida to retire - ending 145 years at the center of the "Greatest Show on Earth".
The endangered Asian elephants will now reside at the Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation, a 200 acre property owned and operated by the circus company, in central Florida.
The center, which is not open to the public, is also focusing on cancer prevention efforts for humans.
Despite a far-greater body mass and far more cells than humans, the lifetime cancer mortality risk for elephants is less than 5 percent, compared with 11 percent to 25 percent in humans, according to Dr. Joshua Schiffman of the University of Utah's Huntsman Cancer Institute.
Schiffman, a pediatric oncologist, and his collaborators say a gene called P53 helps prevent elephants cancer risk by signaling mutating cells to die before they can develop and spread.
The researchers plan to study the DNA in blood from elephants at the center in an effort to learn more about the gene in the hopes developing human treatments in the future.
