Popcorn cassia has been my favorite perennial for years, but it was never meant to be the only one. So I finally started more seeds, both Senna didymobotrya and Senna alexandrina. One for the pollinators and beauty, and one for medicinal use.
Most Senna seeds have hard seed coats, which means they are slow and stubborn to germinate without scarification. I soaked mine in just-boiled water for 24 hours, which softens the coating and helps the seeds absorb moisture. After that, I shallowly sowed them in a fresh batch of seed starting mix and gave them a light cover.
Here’s the part I didn’t expect. I checked three days later and they had already germinated. Not two weeks later, not even one week. Three days. The prep made all the difference.
If you’re growing tough seeds like Senna, proper scarification is essential. You can soak, nick, or sand them, but skipping that step means wasting time. This method worked beautifully and now I’ve got healthy new seedlings that will thrive in the heat and attract pollinators while offering medicinal value.
Can’t wait to get these in the ground and share how they grow. Let me know if you want my exact seed starting mix or tips for transplanting heat-loving perennials. #seedstarting #senna #popcorncassia #germination
