Roof collapses injuring dozens at Apollo Theatre in London

An investigation has been launched into what caused the ceiling of a London theatre to collapse in the middle of a show. Around 80 people were injured, including seven who were badly hurt, when the ceiling caved in at The Apollo, in Shaftesbury Avenue, during the first act of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. People described hearing "creaking" from the ceiling before masonry and plasterwork from the Grade II-listed theatre tumbled down onto the stalls, hitting members of the audience and creating a thick cloud of dust. A spokesman for Nimax Theatres, which owns the Apollo, said: "Our thoughts are with the audience and staff who were in the theatre and their families." Report by Sarah Johnston.
