Lieutenant General (ret.) Michael T. Flynn was the 18th Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency and the top military intelligence officer in the Department of Defense. With more than three decades of intelligence experience, General Flynn has served as the Assistant Director of National Intelligence for Partner Engagement, the senior intelligence officer in Iraq and twice in Afghanistan, the Director of Intelligence for the Joint Special Operations Command under General Stanley McChrystal, and as the Senior Intelligence Advisor for Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Admiral Mike Mullen.
In 2010, General Flynn published the influential report, "Fixing Intel: A Blueprint for Making Intelligence Relevant in Afghanistan," that emphasized the importance of socio-cultural understanding for effective intelligence operations and has been a driven advocate for operations-intelligence fusion and greater information and intelligence sharing between the military, law enforcement, intelligence, and international communities.
General Flynn began his career as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division and holds three masters degrees and two honorary doctorates, along with numerous other military, law enforcement, intelligence and international awards and honors. Additionally, Flynn has received the US Intelligence Community’s Gold Seal Medallion, the Service to America Award from the Federal Law Enforcement Foundation, the Ellis Island Medal of Freedom, and was the first non-Navy recipient of the distinguished RADM Edwin T. Layton Award.
