Southwestern Australia: Splendid Isolation & Biodiverse Glories
Presented by Dr. Alex Mintzer
The Santa Lucia Chapter's August 2021 General Meeting
Alex Mintzer presents a slide show on the landscapes and biodiversity of Southwest Australia, an area visited by few Americans. This area has uncanny similarities with California's Central Coast, but some huge differences too! After brief coverage of the common plants and animals, Alex focuses on the stunning biodiversity of native orchids in this region, with dozens of colorful slides of blooming orchids and their habitats. Concepts from evolutionary biology (coevolution, adaptive radiation) are worked into this amazing narrative!
Alex is Professor Emeritus of Biology from Cypress College in Orange County, where he retired from a full-time teaching career in 2018. Since 2020, he has served as Santa Lucia Chapter Political Committee Chair. He also has served on Sierra Club California's Political Committee and its Executive Committee. Alex earned his Ph.D. in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Michigan in 1982.
Meeting Date: August 20, 2021
