Janabahal’s main deity, Seto Machindranath (also known as Janabaha Dyo or Karunamaya), is worshipped by both Buddhists and Hindus. Although the temple is mainly Buddhist, Hindus see the deity as a form of Lord Shiva, the god of rain and fertility.
The temple courtyard was originally a Buddhist monastery (vihāra), and Janabahal is one of the most important among them in Kathmandu.
This shared worship shows how Newar culture blends Buddhist and Hindu traditions. When you visit Janabahal, you’re not just seeing one type of temple — you’re stepping into a place that represents centuries of mixed faith, art, and history.
In Newar tradition, Karunamaya (Seto Machindranath) is believed to be a manifestation of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, who took human form to relieve people from suffering. Over time, as Hinduism and Buddhism intertwined in the Kathmandu Valley, Avalokiteshvara’s compassionate, rain-bringing qualities were identified with Shiva as Machhindranath, the yogic teacher and rain deity.
