China’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday issued a sharp rebuke of the United States, following President Trump’s order for a naval blockade of sanctioned Oil tankers heading to and from Venezuela. In a high-level diplomatic exchange, Beijing reaffirmed its commitment to the China-Venezuela strategic partnership, framing the U.S. actions as a violation of international law.

During a phone call with his Venezuelan counterpart Yván Gil on December 17, 2025, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi delivered a direct message of support for the Maduro government. According to an official statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi stated:
“China opposes all forms of unilateral bullying and supports all countries in safeguarding their sovereignty and national dignity. Venezuela has the right to independently develop mutually beneficial cooperation with other countries.”

The escalation in Geopolitics follows the U.S. seizure of the tanker Skipper and the designation of the Venezuelan military as a "foreign terrorist organization." Beijing has consistently rejected these "long-arm jurisdiction" tactics, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasizing: “China opposes unilateral illicit sanctions that have no basis in international law or authorization of the UN Security Council.” Despite the pressure from the United States, China remains the largest buyer of Venezuelan crude and has vowed to protect its economic interests in the region.

Xi Jinping previously described the two nations as “close friends, cherished brothers, and good partners,” reinforcing that the China-Venezuela relationship is a cornerstone of Beijing's Politics in Latin America. As Trump invokes a new corollary to the Monroe Doctrine to curb "outside influence," the standoff over Oil and Geopolitics continues to intensify.
