Masahisa Fukase was a renowned Japanese photographer best known for turning his personal life into powerful visual narratives. One of his most intimate and lesser-known works is the From Window series, captured between 1973 and 1974. In this project, Fukase photographed his wife, Yōko Wanibe, every morning from their fourth-floor apartment in Tokyo as she walked to work. The images were taken from a distance, through the same window, forming a quiet yet obsessive documentation of her daily routine.
At the time, the series was seen as an artistic exploration of routine, love, and absence. However, Yōko later shared a different perspective. She expressed that she felt more like a subject than a partner. In her own words, "Fukase has only seen me through the lens" and "All the photographs of me were in fact photographs of himself." She described their married life as emotionally distant and difficult, shaped more by his creative pursuit than their personal connection.
Their marriage ended in 1976. After the separation, Fukase’s focus shifted dramatically. He began photographing ravens, a project that would become his most critically acclaimed work, often interpreted as a reflection of personal loss and loneliness.
This story is not just about photography. It is about what happens when art consumes reality, when the camera becomes a wall instead of a bridge.
