Veteran broadcaster and journalist Sir Mark Tully, widely known as the BBC’s “voice of India”, has died at the age of 90.
Sir Mark spent decades reporting from India, covering some of the country’s most defining moments including the Bhopal gas tragedy, the Babri mosque demolition, political upheavals and major regional conflicts across South Asia.
Born in Kolkata in 1935, Tully lived most of his life in India and became one of the most respected foreign correspondents in the country. He served as the BBC’s Delhi bureau chief for over 20 years and was fluent in Hindi, earning deep trust among Indian audiences.
He was awarded the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan, and was knighted by the British government for his services to journalism.
