The development of the V4 M1 has been described as one of Yamaha’s most ambitious undertakings in recent years. Takahiro Sumi, General Manager of the Motor Sports Development Division, emphasized the scope of the project: “We have undertaken an ambitious project, that of developing a new V4 engine and a completely new motorcycle. This project is particularly demanding when it is carried out simultaneously with the development of the 2025 motorcycle.” He noted that the challenge requires not just a strong engineering effort, but the collective support of the entire Yamaha organization.
While excitement around the V4 is high, Yamaha has been careful to set realistic expectations. The factory has made clear that the ultimate goal is to field a fully competitive V4 package for the 2026 MotoGP season. Any final commitment to the engine architecture will depend on an in-depth evaluation of results at the end of the 2025 testing program. In the meantime, Augusto Fernandez has been confirmed as Yamaha’s lead development rider through 2027, providing continuity in the project.
