This is a tutorial on how to play 'Oh, Susanna' using the great fingerstyle technique.

I have chosen my arrangement of the very well known American standard Oh, Susanna for this tutorial, and the main topic in the video is how to play this song by using fingerstyle technique. (This is also called 'boom chick' after the sound made by the bass line.) Playing in this way is not for starters on the guitar, and I would say this arrangement can be quite challenging if you have never worked on this style before. In this kind of playing the right hand very often is doing three different things at the same time, so you might have to work extra on this to get comfortable with handling three (or more) separate voices in a good way.

The song is in the key of G and has three chords, G, D and C. (The D chord is played with F# as bass note on the sixth string). The video is in four parts:

1) Introduction (stop the video to read the whole text), then we have just the melody played in a straight forward rhythm (without syncopation). If you want to use music/tab for this, you find the melody in the upper line.

2) Now you will learn the bass line, and this very important part of the music is played slowly to really learn and understand the fundament of the fingerstyle technique. You use the thumb for the bass line and play 1/4 notes the whole way through. (Notice the muting effect with the palm of the right hand.)

3) Now, the the whole arrangement played slowly with bass line, syncopated melody and some chord tones.

4) Finally, the whole song played in full tempo (and you can of course play it a lot faster too if you like).
