Frank Black, formerly known as Black Francis, is one of alternative rock’s most iconic and enigmatic figures. Best known as the frontman of the legendary Pixies, Black Francis helped redefine underground rock in the late ‘80s with a fusion of surf punk, noise rock, and surreal, sci-fi-influenced lyrics. But when the Pixies disbanded in 1993, Francis shed his stage name and reinvented himself as Frank Black, launching a solo career that proved just as ambitious—and in many ways, more experimental—than his work with the Pixies.
