Alport Castles Circular Walk and Scramble Up The Tower | Peak District Walks

Описание: Join me to do the Alport Castles circular walk and the Alport Castles Scramble up the Tower in the Peak District, England. This Alport Castles circular walk starts and finishes on the A57 Snake Pass. We first walk up a well defined path starting at Hayridge Farm which eventually brings you to Alport Castles Farm. From here you bare right where the path takes you over a bridge and up the hill to the Alport Castles scramble. We then make the Alport Castles tower scramble.

After scrambling The Tower we head up to Birchin Hat (the cliff tops) to get a look at The Tower from above as well as Little Moor which is also part of the landslip feature. It's then time to head back down to the Snake Pass via Rowlee Pasture and back to the car to make this circular route.

The Alport Castles landslide are a landslip feature, thought to be the UK's largest, which resides in the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire, It was formed when the softer sandstones and shales of Birchin Hat slipped away from the rock-face. The Millstone Grit on the top broke up into blocks and tumbled down the valley side, creating a chaotic landscape of fallen boulders. The name "castles" comes from the debris from the landslide, which has produced several gritstone mounds that tower over the valley and appear from the distance to look like castles. The largest of these, the "Tower," resembles a full-scale motte and bailey castle. The Alport Castles are located on the eastern side of the River Alport valley, part of the National Trust's High Peak Estate, and lie north of the Snake Pass and north-west of the Ladybower Reservoir.
